YES! Yes I have
It was definitely a lot more flash than it was substance.
They threw a giant budget at it, which is nice. Visually it looked fantastic, even if I am not a big fan of the new look of the Klingons. They just look too much like monsters, and it was clear that they were forced to make the 2 important Klingons in the pilot stand out, by making one black skinned and the other white skinned, so people could tell them apart from the other Klingons. Maybe the look will grow on me, it just doesn’t look very easy to act in those rubber suits. Also another JJ.Abrams style Vulcan(though not technically Vulcan) with anger issues. I just want a damn Vulcan who relies on logic.
The main character came off rather poorly, she wasn’t likable, which might be okay if they can make the redemption story work. Having a main character on a Star Trek show at all might be a bigger issue for me. Sure the Captain usually gets a bigger spotlight, but even in the original series that had Kirk AND Spock and then eventually made McCoy a main character as well. A show like Deep Space 9 had a whole cast of main characters and it offered a lot variety in plot.
Who knows how it will turn out though, this was just a pilot, basically a throwaway plot, rather than really establishing what the show will be. Star Trek pilots also have a history of being quite bad, comparatively this was actually quite good.
Still I wasn’t crazy about it, but I am hopeful that it will steer in the direction that makes me love Star Trek
